FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto’o has fired back with a fierce, compromising response against allegations broadcast by several Western media outlets. The explosive comments follow an intense journalistic investigation alleging that a €567,570 (roughly $665,000) match fee paid by the Russian Football Federation for Cameroon’s October 2023 friendly in Moscow was diverted directly into Eto’o’s personal bank account in Qatar rather than entering the official federation books.
Accusations of Media Hypocrisy
- The Backlash: In a defiant public statement, Eto’o argued that the sudden timing and uniform nature of the financial leaks are not a coincidence, stating: “It only took me to speak up to defend our interests, the interests of Africa, for them to all come out. Coincidentally, the same attacks, the same language elements, relayed almost simultaneously by journalists who are loyal to them.”
- The Double Standard: The legendary striker turned administrator targeted European institutions, adding, “Those who spend their time giving us lessons on democracy seem to have much more trouble accepting it when an African speaks freely, defends his convictions, and refuses to remain silent.”
- The Ultimate Defense: Close associates maintain that the funds were handled transparently due to severe US banking constraints and Russian financial restrictions, completely denying any personal enrichment.

The media storm comes on the heels of Eto’o forcefully defending FIFA President Gianni Infantino in a political battle against UEFA’s leadership. Firmly standing his ground against the ethics complaints filed by former executives, Eto’o concluded his defense with an absolute declaration of sovereignty: “We have the right to speak. We have the right to defend our interests. We have the right to think and decide for our football.“
